Established over a century ago by the North Carolina General Assembly on March 4, 1911, the Caswell Developmental Center has been a cornerstone in providing residential services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Since opening its doors on July 1, 1914, it remains the state’s oldest facility of its kind, initially accommodating up to 2,000 residents before other state facilities were established. Today, Caswell Developmental Center serves a population of 378 individuals, maintaining a steadfast commitment to delivering exemplary supports and services. Our 1,429 dedicated employees prioritize individualized care, safety, health, and fostering independence through engaging activities and social interactions. Embracing innovation and best practices, we continuously strive to enhance operations and advance person-centered services that are both technologically advanced and fiscally responsible. As we look ahead, Caswell Developmental Center remains optimistic about its future, anticipating ongoing improvements and a bright path ahead in serving our community.
