Established in 1992, the Veterans Consortium Pro Bono Program (Pro Bono Program) serves a dual mission focused on providing critical support to unrepresented veterans and their family members navigating appeals at the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (Court), and training attorneys in the specialized field of veterans’ law. Each appellant seeking assistance through the Pro Bono Program undergoes a meticulous review of their appeal. For appellants whose cases cannot be taken on by the Program, they receive comprehensive legal advice and a detailed explanation.
Volunteer attorneys participating in the Pro Bono Program undergo extensive training in veterans law, including a one-day class conducted by the Consortium. Attorneys who accept cases from the Program receive thorough case analyses prepared by veterans’ law specialists at the Consortium. They are also provided with essential research materials, such as the latest edition of the Veterans Benefits Manual from LexisNexis. Additionally, each attorney is paired with a mentoring attorney who offers ongoing guidance and support throughout the appeal process, ensuring that veterans receive dedicated legal assistance tailored to their specific needs and challenges.
